How could I know<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Its stones, its trees, its air,<br \/>\nThe stream, the small church, the dark rain would say:<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;You&#8217;ve come; you&#8217;ve seen; now stay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A guest?&#8221; I asked. &#8220;Yes, as you are on earth.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;The means?&#8221; &#8220;&#8230; will come, don&#8217;t fear.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;What of the risk?&#8221; &#8220;Our lives are that from birth.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;His ghost?&#8221; &#8220;His soul is here.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;He&#8217;ll change my style.&#8221; &#8220;Well, but you could do worse<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Than rent his rooms of verse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joy came, and grief; love came, and loss; three years &ndash;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tiles down; moles up; drought; flood.<br \/>\nThough far in time and faith, I share his tears,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His hearth, his ground, his mud;<br \/>\nYet my host stands just out of mind and sight,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That I may sit and write.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flash<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bright bird, whose swift blue wings gleam out<br \/>\nAs on the stream you dip and rise,<br \/>\nYou, as you scan for parr and trout,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Flash past my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Bright trout, who glints in fin and scale,<br \/>\nWhose whim is grubs, whose dream is flies,<br \/>\nYou, with one whisk of your quick tail,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Flick past my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Bright stream, home to bright fish and birds,<br \/>\nA gold glow as the gold sun dies,<br \/>\nYou too, too fast for these poor words,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Flow past my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>But such drab words, ah, sad to say,<br \/>\nWhen all that&#8217;s bright has fled and gone,<br \/>\nPraised by dull folk, dressed all in grey,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Live on and on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hearts-ease, hearts-bane; a balm that chafes one raw;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The soul in splints; graph with no grid or gauge;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A fort, a house on stilts, a hut of straw;<br \/>\nA tic, a weal, the flu, the plague, the rage;<br \/>\nBug swept in through the net; moth with a sting;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Two planes in fog jammed blind; a mailed kid glove;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A dance on coals that makes us yelp and sing;<br \/>\nA rook or roc or swan or goose or dove;<br \/>\nA beast of light; a blaze to quench or stoke;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bread burst and burnt; sweet wind-fall; storm-cloud-milk;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hope raised and razed; skin-ploy; sleep-foil; steel-silk;<br \/>\nHands held in lieu of breath; our genes&#8217; sick joke;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The sea to drink or sink in; the gods&#8217; sty;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What we must have or die; or have and die.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>three poems inspired by George Herbert TLS 2007.01.11 Host I heard it was for sale and thought I&#8217;d go &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To see the old house where He lived three years, and died.
