\nLed by Hesper’s guiding light?

\nIn his place the restless main,
\nThat within fixed bounds he keeps,
\nNor o’er earth in deluge sweeps?
\nLove it is that holds the chains,
\nLove o’er sea and earth that reigns;
\nLove\u2014whom else but sovereign Love?\u2014
\nLove, high lord in heaven above!
\nYet should he his care remit,
\nAll that now so close is knit
\nIn sweet love and holy peace,
\nWould no more from conflict cease,
\nBut with strife’s rude shock and jar
\nAll the world’s fair fabric mar.
\nTribes and nations Love unites
\nBy just treaty’s sacred rites;
\nWedlock’s bonds he sanctifies
\nBy affection’s softest ties.
\nLove appointeth, as is due,
\nFaithful laws to comrades true\u2014
\nLove, all-sovereign Love!\u2014oh, then,
\nYe are blest, ye sons of men,
\nIf the love that rules the sky
