Ill-prepared for the privilege of living,
\nI can barely keep up with the pace that the action demands.
\nI improvise, although I loathe improvisation.
\nI trip at every step over my own ignorance.
\nI can\u2019t conceal my hayseed manners.
\nMy instincts are for happy histrionics.
\nStage fright makes excuses for me, which humiliate me more.
\nExtenuating circumstances strike me as cruel.<\/p>\n
Words and impulses you can\u2019t take back,
\nstars you\u2019ll never get counted,
\nyour character like a raincoat you button on the run \u2014
\nthe pitiful results of all this unexpectedness.<\/p>\n
If only I could just rehearse one Wednesday in advance,
\nor repeat a single Thursday that has passed!
\nBut here comes Friday with a script I haven\u2019t seen.
\nIs it fair, I ask
\n(my voice a little hoarse,
\nsince I couldn\u2019t even clear my throat offstage).<\/p>\n
You\u2019d be wrong to think that it\u2019s just a slapdash quiz
\ntaken in makeshift accommodations. Oh no.
\nI\u2019m standing on the set and I see how strong it is.
\nThe props are surprisingly precise.
\nThe machine rotating the stage has been around even longer.
\nThe farthest galaxies have been turned on.
\nOh no, there\u2019s no question, this must be the premiere.
\nAnd whatever I do
