{"id":1432,"date":"2017-05-05T12:00:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T16:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/?p=1432"},"modified":"2017-05-10T14:05:06","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T18:05:06","slug":"vladimir-nabokov-on-rulers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/2017\/1432\/poems\/vladimir-nabokov-on-rulers\/","title":{"rendered":"Vladimir Nabokov:  On Rulers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You will (as sometimes<br \/>\npeople say)<br \/>\nlaugh; you will (as clairvoyants<br \/>\nsay) roar with laughter, gentlemen\u2014<br \/>\nbut, word of honor,<br \/>\nI have a crony,<br \/>\nwho<br \/>\nwould be thrilled to shake hands<br \/>\nwith the head of a state or of any other<br \/>\nenterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Since when, I wonder,<br \/>\nin the pit of the stomach<br \/>\nwe\u2019ve begun to experience a tender<br \/>\nbubbling, when looking through an opera glass<br \/>\nat the burly one, bristly haired, in the grand box?<br \/>\nSince when the concept<br \/>\nof authority has been equated<br \/>\nwith the seminal notion of patria?<\/p>\n<p>All sorts of Romans and butchers;<br \/>\nCharles the Handsome and Charles the Hideous;<br \/>\nutterly rotten princelings; fat-breasted<br \/>\nGerman ladies; and various<br \/>\ncannibals, loverboys, lumbermen,<br \/>\nJohns, Lewises, Lenins,<br \/>\nemitting stool grunts of strain and release,<br \/>\npropping elbows on knees,<br \/>\nsat on their massive old thrones.<br \/>\nThe historian dies of sheer boredom:<br \/>\nOn the heels of Mamay comes another Mamay.<br \/>\nDoes our plight really force us to do<br \/>\nwhat did bureaucratic Cathay<br \/>\nthat with heaps of superfluous centuries<br \/>\naugmented her limited history<br \/>\n(which, however, hardly became<br \/>\neither better or merrier)?<\/p>\n<p>Per contra, the coachmen of empires look good<br \/>\nwhen performing their duties: swiftly<br \/>\ntoward them flies the blue of the sky;<br \/>\ntheir flame-colored sleeves clap in the wind;<br \/>\nthe foreign observer looks on and sees<br \/>\nin front bulging eyes of great beauty<br \/>\nand behind a beautiful blend<br \/>\nof divan cushion and monstrous pumpkin.<br \/>\nBut the decorated big fellow or else<br \/>\nthe trench-coated wolf<br \/>\nin his army cap with a German steep peak,<br \/>\nhoarse-voiced, his face all distorted,<br \/>\nspeaking from an immobile convertible,<br \/>\nor, again, a banquet<br \/>\nwith Caucasian wine.<br \/>\nNo, thank you.<\/p>\n<p>If my late namesake,<br \/>\nwho used to write verse, in rank<br \/>\nand in file, at the very dawn<br \/>\nof the Soviet Small-Bourgeois order,<br \/>\nhad lived till its noon<br \/>\nhe would be now finding taut rhymes<br \/>\nsuch as \u201cpraline\u201d<br \/>\nor \u201cair chill,\u201d<br \/>\nand others of the same kind.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You will (as sometimes people say) laugh; you will (as clairvoyants say) roar with laughter, gentlemen\u2014 but, word of honor, I have a crony, who would be thrilled to shake hands with the head of a state or of any other enterprise.
