I brooded on dark water,
\nwas neither fish nor bird,
\nan unembodied voice

made light, space, words and time
\ncreatures that glow and grow,
\nbodies that shine above
\nand root, glide, creep below.<\/p>\n
Seeing all this was good
\nI wanted creatures who
\nwill share my admiration
\nof everything I do.<\/p>\n
Though always bodiless
\nI have a certain form
\nso modelled it in clay,
\ngave breath to make it warm.<\/p>\n
You are my image, folks,
\ngreater than all you see
\nin intellectual scope,
\nbut not as great as me.<\/p>\n
Your dreadful faults, alas,
\nreflect what I desired:
\na need to make new life,
\na need to be admired.<\/p>\n
New lives made with labour,
\nbodies requiring breath,
\ncome to displace their makers,
\ncondemning them to death.<\/p>\n
I will not mend the faults
\nthat generate your woes.
\nMistakes can be creative too,
\nas every artist knows.<\/p>\n
