White: In Ecclesiastes I Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Ecclesiastes I read,<br \/>\n&#8220;That which is far off and exceeding deep,<br \/>\nWho can find it out?&#8221;<br \/>\nWho can tell the earth&#8217;s tale of wearing down,<br \/>\nbuilding up, erosion, creation,<br \/>\na swirl of embers breathing amethyst and tourmaline,<br \/>\na suffering bounded by the four baleful rivers of Hell<br \/>\nand a sun that will one day collapse,<br \/>\nengulfing it in one long dragon breath of dying out?<br \/>\nThe ancients said earth was immovable\u2014<br \/>\nthat every daffodil and sequoia<br \/>\nwas fixed in its own sky-blue mirror.<br \/>\nNow we know this planet is like others,<br \/>\nrestless, driven, continually torn apart<br \/>\nand reassembled by a shifting of plates<br \/>\ngrinding beneath the surface like nervous molars.<br \/>\nThe globe itself a work in progress<br \/>\nwith its iced poles wandering<br \/>\nand its fires bubbling below the seas.<br \/>\nEven its path through space<br \/>\nis an egg-shaped, elliptical orbit, hardly circular.<br \/>\nIt is here on what used to be called solid ground<br \/>\nthat we live\u2014fragile, torn by our need<br \/>\nfor love, food and mercy.<br \/>\nMost of us worried there will be too little time<br \/>\nto light the lamps of our fingers<br \/>\nand walk the narrow path in the rain.<br \/>\nBut what of the earth?
