In Ecclesiastes I read,
\n“That which is far off and exceeding deep,
\nWho can find it out?”
\nWho can tell the earth’s tale of wearing down,
\nbuilding up, erosion, creation,
\na swirl of embers breathing amethyst and tourmaline,
\na suffering bounded by the four baleful rivers of Hell
\nand a sun that will one day collapse,
\nengulfing it in one long dragon breath of dying out?
\nThe ancients said earth was immovable\u2014
\nthat every daffodil and sequoia
\nwas fixed in its own sky-blue mirror.
\nNow we know this planet is like others,
\nrestless, driven, continually torn apart
\nand reassembled by a shifting of plates
\ngrinding beneath the surface like nervous molars.
\nThe globe itself a work in progress
\nwith its iced poles wandering
\nand its fires bubbling below the seas.
\nEven its path through space
\nis an egg-shaped, elliptical orbit, hardly circular.
\nIt is here on what used to be called solid ground
\nthat we live\u2014fragile, torn by our need
\nfor love, food and mercy.
\nMost of us worried there will be too little time
\nto light the lamps of our fingers
\nand walk the narrow path in the rain.
\nBut what of the earth? Who can find it out\u2014
\nembrace its drifting continents,
\nwho can love it as it is\u2014unfinished,
\nsmudged with the dust of rare constellations,
