BYZANTINE COIN<\/strong><\/p>\n

How many hands, vicissitudes,
\nHave worn this gold to the thin ghost
\nThat gleams in the shopkeeper’s palm?
\nA millennium flickers, eludes
\nUs, is gone, as we bend engrossed
\nIn blurred words and a surface charm.<\/p>\n

SERVICE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mismanaged love, at large, made vagrant,
\nUncontained seeking the enormous land<\/p>\n

Seen fleetingly, once manifest, now lost:
\nSeeking the defining rite, the service<\/p>\n

That the heart could bend to \u2013 of rosary,
\nOr gun, or patient domesticity.<\/p>\n

THE EPIC SCHOLAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is his life? the library,
\n  Worn books minutely scanned,
\nThe evening and the single meal.
\n  He dreams of the vast land.<\/p>\n

He sees behind the urtext loom
\n  The dedicated band
\nWho, barbarous, inhabit him:
\n  He dreams of the vast land.<\/p>\n

A scholar’s indolence: the shelves
\n  Dissolve to endless sand;
\nHorizons touched, lost enmities:
\n  He dreams of the vast land.<\/p>\n

His patience thins: minutiae:
\n  His predecessors planned
\nThe complex text impeccably:
\n  He dreams of the vast land,<\/p>\n

His solitary action there:
\n  O he can understand
\nHis love’s futility: but look,
