Williams &#8211; Marina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;m reading Tsvetayeva&#8217;s essays,<br \/>\n&#8220;Art in the Light of Conscience,&#8221;<br \/>\nstunning- <em>&#8220;Art, a series of answers<br \/>\nto which there are no questions&#8221; &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\na tiny insect I don&#8217;t recognize<br \/>\nis making its way across my table.<br \/>\nIt has lovely transparent wings<br \/>\nbut for some reason they drag behind<br \/>\nas it treks the expanse of formica,<br \/>\nand descends into a crack.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;To each answer before it evaporates,<br \/>\nour question&#8221;<\/em>: composed in Paris<br \/>\nduring the difficult years of exile.<br \/>\nBut which of her years weren&#8217;t?<br \/>\nThis at least was before the husband,<br \/>\na spy, an assassin, went back,<br \/>\nthen she, too, with her son,<br \/>\nto the Soviet madhouse, back.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;This being outgalloped by answers<br \/>\nis inspiration.&#8221;<\/em> Outgalloped!<\/p>\n<p>Still lugging its filigreed train,<br \/>\nthe insect emerges: fragile, distracted,<br \/>\nit can&#8217;t even trace a straight line<br \/>\nbut it circumnavigates the table.<br \/>\nDoes it know it&#8217;s back where it began?<\/p>\n<p>Still, it perseveres, pushing<br \/>\ncourageously on, one inch, another.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Art.. a kind of physical world<br \/>\nof the spiritual&#8230; A spiritual world<br \/>\nof the physical&#8230; almost flesh.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One daughter, dying, at three,<br \/>\nof hunger, the other daughter,<br \/>\nthat gift of a sugar-cube,<br \/>\nin her mouth, drenched in blood&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;A poet is an answer&#8230; not to the blow,<br \/>\nbut a quivering of the air.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nThe years of wandering,<br \/>\nthe weary return, husband betrayed,<br \/>\narrested, daughter in a camp&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;The soul is our capacity for pain.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When I breathe across it,<br \/>\nthe bug squats, quakes, finally flies.<br \/>\nAnd couldn&#8217;t she have flown again,<br \/>\nagain have been flown? Couldnt she,<br \/>\nnoose in her hand, have proclaimed,<br \/>\n&#8220;I am Tsvetayeva,&#8221; and then not?<br \/>\nNo, no time now for &#8220;then not.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut <em>&#8220;Above poet, more than poet&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nshe&#8217;d already said it, already sung it:<br \/>\n<em>Air finished.
