As was my custom, I\u2019d risen a full hour<\/div>\n
before the house had woken to make sure<\/div>\n
that everything was in order with The Lie,<\/div>\n
his drip changed and his shackles all secure.<\/div>\n
I was by then so practiced in this chore<\/div>\n
I\u2019d counted maybe thirteen years or more<\/div>\n
since last I\u2019d felt the urge to meet his eye.<\/div>\n
Such, I liked to think, was our rapport.<\/div>\n
I was at full stretch to test some ligature<\/div>\n
when I must have caught a ragged thread, and tore<\/div>\n
his gag away; though as he made no cry,<\/div>\n
I kept on with my checking as before.<\/div>\n
Why do you call me The Lie?<\/em> he said. I swore:<\/div>\n
it was a child\u2019s voice. I looked up from the floor.<\/div>\n
The dark had turned his eyes to milk and sky<\/div>\n
and his arms and legs were all one scarlet sore.<\/div>\n
He was a boy of maybe three or four.<\/div>\n
His straps and chains were all the things he wore.<\/div>\n
Knowing I could make him no reply<\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/strong>I took the gag before he could say more<\/div>\n
and put it back as tight as it would tie<\/div>\n
