Message from the Chairperson

Welcome to the Canadian Forces Grievance Board.

Bruno Hamel, ChairpersonCreated ten years ago under the National Defence Act, the Board is a federal body with quasi-judicial functions that is independent of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces; it reviews the military grievances referred to it and provides impartial findings and recommendations to the Chief of the Defence Staff and the grievor.

Since it began operations in June 2000, the Board has established itself as a centre of excellence for military grievance resolution and has developed, over the years, extensive expertise in a multitude of subjects related to the administration of the affairs of the CF. The Board has also acquired an impressive body of knowledge arising from its review of grievances and is able to identify trends and systemic issues which we pass on to the senior leadership of the Canadian Forces.

The Board is a dynamic organization, respectful of its mandate and the various stakeholders it serves with professionalism and enthusiasm. Because of its distinct role, the Board strengthens confidence in, and adds to, the fairness and transparency of the CF grievance process. The CFGB reports to Parliament and the public. It acts in accordance with the government's values of fairness, transparency, and impartiality and in full compliance with governmental policies and regulations.

I invite you to consult some of the grievance cases reviewed by the Board in the Case Summaries section, which is updated on a regular basis. You can also visit our new Statistics section, updated on a quarterly basis. These statistics provide an overview of the Findings and Recommendations issued by the Board over the last five years, as well as the Chief of the Defence Staff's responses to those F&Rs. Finally, you can learn more about the Board's role in the military grievance system by visiting the Canadian Forces Grievance Process section.

Enjoy your visit!
