Bronze-buffed. Ear to the ground.<br \/>\nMy eye at turf level. Its snailskin lid.<br \/>\nMy cushioned cheek and brow. My phantom hand<br \/>\nAnd arm and leg and shoulder that felt pillowed<br \/>\nAs fleshily as when the bog pith weighed<br \/>\nTo mould me to itself and it to me<br \/>\nBetween when I was buried and unburied.<br \/>\nBetween what happened and was meant to be.<br \/>\nOn show for years while all that lay in wait<br \/>\nStill waited. Disembodied. Far renowned.<br \/>\nFaith placed in me, me faithless as a stone<br \/>\nThe harrow turned up when the crop was sown.<br \/>\nOut in the Danish night I&#8217;d hear soft wind<br \/>\nAnd remember moony water in a rut.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Cattle out in rain, their knowledgeable<br \/>\nSolid standing and readiness to wait,<br \/>\nThese I learned from. I stood by in the wet.<br \/>\nMy head as washy as a head of kale.<br \/>\nShedding water like the flanks and tail<br \/>\nOf every dumb beast sunk above the cloot<br \/>\nfit trampled mud, bringing their heavyweight<br \/>\nSilence to hear on nosed-at sludge and puddle.<br \/>\nOf another world, unlearnable. and so<br \/>\nTo he liked by, whatever it was I knew<br \/>\nCame back to me. Newfound contrariness.<br \/>\nIn check-out lines, at cash-points, in those queues<br \/>\nOf wired, far-faced smilers.
