\nthe lot you’re made a slave by the gods?<\/p>\n

Learn to love tranquillity, and against all odds
\ncoax your glum spirit to its share of mirth.<\/p>\n

\nMan’s clay, and such a measly bit
\nand measuring the Infinite!<\/p>\n

Leave geography alone, you can’t survey
\nthe paltry area of that poor clay.<\/p>\n

Forget the spheres and first assess
\nnot space but your own littleness.<\/p>\n

\nGod rot the guts and guts’ indulgences.
\nIt’s their fault that sobriety lets go.<\/p>\n

\nLoving the rituals that keep men close,
\nNature created means for friends apart:<\/p>\n

pen, paper, ink, the alphabet,
\nsigns for the distant and disconsolate heart.<\/p>\n

\nmy Pindar, my Callimachus, the lot.
\nI’m a bad ‘case’. It’s poverty I’ve got.
