This is my plan–(first drinking its good luck)–
\nI will accept all helps; all I despised
\nSo rashly at the outset, equally
\nWith early impulses, late years have quenched:
\nI have tried each way singly: now for both!
\nAll helps! no one sort shall exclude the rest.
\nI seek to know and to enjoy at once,
\nNot one without the other as before.
\nSuppose my labour should seem God’s own cause
\nOnce more, as first I dreamed,–it shall not baulk me
\nOf the meanest earthliest sensualest delight
\nThat may be snatched; for every joy is gain,
\nAnd gain is gain, however small. My soul
\nCan die then, nor be taunted–“what was gained?”
\nNor, on the other hand, should pleasure follow
\nAs though I had not spurned her hitherto,
\nShall she o’ercloud my spirit’s rapt communion
\nWith the tumultuous past, the teeming future,
\nGlorious with visions of a full success.<\/p>\n
