Cacciaguida urges Dante to speak out<\/em><\/p>\n

The light in which it had appeared to me,
\nThat jewel of reserve, suddenly flashed
\nLike a ray of sun in the gold depths of a mirror,<\/p>\n

And carried on: “Those alone who blush
\nInwardly, at their own or their neighbours’ shame,
\nWill find your tidings harsh.<\/p>\n

But nevertheless, you must stake your claim,
\nIn the teeth of lies, to absolute recall,
\nAnd let them scratch whose itch has been inflamed.<\/p>\n

And if what you say is hard for them to swallow
\nAt the beginning, let them digest it –
\nNourishment will follow.<\/p>\n

Let your voice, like a storm-force gust,
\nBlow louder the higher the peaks it screams off –
\nYou will only be doing yourself proper honour and justice.<\/p>\n

That is why, in the giant scheme of things –
\nThe mountain, and the anguished under-valley –
\nYou were allowed to meet only the great and famous,<\/p>\n

For the souls of your readers, undecided still,
\nWill not be convinced, if all they hear
\nAre unknown stories, good or ill,<\/p>\n

Of those whose names have vanished with the years.”<\/p>\n
