{"id":289,"date":"2010-11-19T22:28:57","date_gmt":"2010-11-20T03:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/?p=289"},"modified":"2010-11-19T22:28:57","modified_gmt":"2010-11-20T03:28:57","slug":"edward-said-thoughts-on-late-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/2010\/289\/book-notes\/edward-said-thoughts-on-late-style\/","title":{"rendered":"Edward Said thoughts on late style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>London Review of Books<\/em>, August 5 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Said examines the way in which the work of some great artists and writers acquire a new idiom at the end of the their lives &#8211; a late style.<\/p>\n<p>Beethoven: his late works are a form of exile from his milieu.<br \/>\n&#8220;There is heroism here, but also intrasigence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Late style is what happens if art does not abdicate its rights in favour of reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adorno on Beethoven, sees his late works &#8220;as communicating a tragic sense in spite of their irascibility&#8221; and that Beethoven seems to &#8220;inhabit the late works as a lamenting personality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The late works are about lost totality, and it is in this sense that they are catastrophic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Beethoven&#8217;s late style, remorsely alienated and obscure, is the prototypical modern aesthetic form.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The prerogative of late style: it has the power to render disenchantment and pleasure without resolving the contradiction between them.
