{"id":297,"date":"2010-11-19T22:32:31","date_gmt":"2010-11-20T03:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/?p=297"},"modified":"2010-11-19T22:32:31","modified_gmt":"2010-11-20T03:32:31","slug":"derek-mahon-jardin-du-luxembourg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/2010\/297\/poems\/derek-mahon-jardin-du-luxembourg\/","title":{"rendered":"Derek Mahon &#8211; Jardin du Luxembourg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(after Rilke)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A merry-go-round of freshly painted horses<br \/>\nsprung from a childish world vividly bright<br \/>\nbefore dispersing in adult oblivion<br \/>\nand losing its quaint legendary light<br \/>\nspins in the shadows of a burbling circus.<br \/>\nSome draw toy coaches but remain upright;<br \/>\na roebuck flashes past, a fierce red lion<br \/>\nand every time an elephant ivory-white.<\/p>\n<p>As if down in the forest of Fontainebleau<br \/>\na little girl wrapped up in royal blue<br \/>\nrides round on a unicorn; a valiant son<br \/>\nhangs on to the lion with a frantic laugh,<br \/>\nhot fists gripping the handles for dear life;<br \/>\nthen that white elephant with ivory tusks \u2013<br \/>\nan intense scrum of scarves and rumpled socks<br \/>\nthough the great whirligig is just for fun.<\/p>\n<p>The ring revolves until the time runs out,<br \/>\nsquealing excitedly to the final shout<br \/>\nas pop-eyed children gasp there in their grey<br \/>\njackets and skirts, wild bobble and beret.<br \/>\nNow you can study faces, different types,<br \/>\nthe tiny features starting to take shape<br \/>\nwith proud, heroic grins for the grown-ups,<br \/>\nshining and blind as if from a mad scrape.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(after Rilke) A merry-go-round of freshly painted horses sprung from a childish world vividly bright before dispersing in adult oblivion and losing its quaint legendary light spins in the shadows of a burbling circus.
