{"id":768,"date":"2011-04-21T22:21:46","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T02:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/2011\/768\/poems\/andrew-marvell-a-dialogue-between-the-soul-and-body\/"},"modified":"2011-04-21T22:21:46","modified_gmt":"2011-04-22T02:21:46","slug":"andrew-marvell-a-dialogue-between-the-soul-and-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kuny.ca\/blogs\/2011\/768\/poems\/andrew-marvell-a-dialogue-between-the-soul-and-body\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrew Marvell: &#8220;A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Soul.<br \/>\nO, WHO shall from this dungeon raise<br \/>\nA soul enslaved so many ways ?<br \/>\nWith bolts of bones, that fettered stands<br \/>\nIn feet, and manacled in hands ;<br \/>\nHere blinded with an eye, and there<br \/>\nDeaf with the drumming of an ear ;<br \/>\nA soul hung up, as &#8217;twere, in chains<br \/>\nOf nerves, and arteries, and veins ;<br \/>\nTortured, besides each other part,<br \/>\nIn a vain head, and double heart ? <\/p>\n<p>Body.<br \/>\nO, who shall me deliver whole,<br \/>\nFrom bonds of this tyrannic soul ?<br \/>\nWhich, stretched upright, impales me so<br \/>\nThat mine own precipice I go ;<br \/>\nAnd warms and moves this needless frame,<br \/>\n(A fever could but do the same),<br \/>\nAnd, wanting where its spite to try,<br \/>\nHas made me live to let me die<br \/>\nA body that could never rest,<br \/>\nSince this ill spirit it possessed. <\/p>\n<p>Soul.<br \/>\nWhat magic could me thus confine<br \/>\nWithin another&#8217;s grief to pine ?<br \/>\nWhere, whatsoever it complain,<br \/>\nI feel, that cannot feel, the pain ;<br \/>\nAnd all my care itself employs,<br \/>\nThat to preserve which me destroys ;<br \/>\nConstrained not only to endure<br \/>\nDiseases, but, what&#8217;s worse, the cure ;<br \/>\nAnd, ready oft the port to gain,<br \/>\nAm shipwrecked into health again.<\/p>\n<p>Body.<br \/>\nBut Physic yet could never reach<br \/>\nThe maladies thou me dost teach ;<br \/>\nWhom first the cramp of hope does tear,<br \/>\nAnd then the palsy shakes of fear ;<br \/>\nThe pestilence of love does heat,<br \/>\nOr hatred&#8217;s hidden ulcer eat ;<br \/>\nJoy&#8217;s cheerful madness does perplex,<br \/>\nOr sorrow&#8217;s other madness vex ;<br \/>\nWhich knowledge forces me to know,<br \/>\nAnd memory will not forego ;<br \/>\nWhat but a soul could have the wit<br \/>\nTo build me up for sin so fit ?<br \/>\nSo architects do square and hew<br \/>\nGreen trees that in the forest grew.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soul.
